Residual value is defined as the price for which a piece of used equipment could be sold in the market at a particular time. Terminology that is used to describe this concept varies widely. Among the similar terms are resale value, remaining value, recovery value, salvage value, scrap value, terminal value, trade-in value, and fair market value. Confusion is added when the term depreciation, meaning a lessening of the initial economic value, is used. Such value loss generates the residual value of the equipment.
Residual value is a key uncertainty in determining the owning costs of equipment. The salvage or residual value of a piece of equipment, whether at the end of its useful life or at some age before, will affect cash flows, rates of depreciation, maintenance and repair decisions, and new and used machine purchase decisions. It is in fact possible to predict the residual value of intermodal equipment and several functional forms are possible to for modeling the residual value of intermodal equipment which yield high coefficients of determination by using data sets that we gather and process through our own proprietary GIES algorithmic valuation model.
Our straightforward methodology for collecting, preparing, and analyzing data sets our valuation modeling apart from most of the traditional approaches taken by others in this industry. Input values at work in the GIES algorithm include manufacturer, condition rating, geographic region, age in calendar years, as well as publicly accessible data from equipment auctions and publications by manufacturers and their distributors. Macroeconomic indicators are also weighted in our analysis reports for identifying statistically significant economic factors and global trade patterns that impact the residual value of intermodal equipment.
We have produced valuation reports for Multinational Finance companies, Insurance companies, Fleet managers and Government Agencies.
GIES offers extra on-site portable storage containers. Our secure dry storage containers come in a variety of sizes and are ready for immediate delivery. GIES provides units that are above standard in appearance, and security so you can ensure your products are safely stored in the outdoors. Our dry storage containers are available for rent lease and sale.
GIES can help keep your perishables fresh with extra on-site refrigerated storage and 24/7 personalized customer service. All of our containers are zinc-coated and contain corrosion-resistant stainless-steel lining, ensuring that they will withstand the most severe weather conditions while maintaining thermal efficiency.
Also available are containers specifically customized by GIES. All modifications from door configurations, lighting alterations, shelving configurations, cooling guards, electric and diesel modifications can be preformed by GIES in regard to single units up to and including fleet packages.
Refrigerated containers require a source of energy to keep them up and running. If you have 220 volts 3-phase power available on-site, you will not require a portable generator known as a genset. However, if it is not available, there are two ways to keep your perishables at optimum temperature: with portable, diesel-powered gensets that clip on to the container or are mounted underneath the chassis. We offer gensets from Carrier, Thermo King and Bodeneimer, all readily available for immediate delivery and installation.
GIES offers chassis systems of all configurations from gooseneck to slider axle sizes ranging from 20′ to 40′ in length and are used for dock high loading and transportation of containers. GIES offers container chassis systems that are built by a variety of industry leading manufacturers that either meet or exceed the highway regulatory standards of all the countries we place equipment in.
Industry standards that are met or exceeded include the following:
All chassis come standard with spring suspensions, 10×20 tires on 5 spoke wheels, ABS, and two speed landing legs.
Whether your organization is in the position of lessee or purchaser and require guidance on enforcing warranty claims from manufacturers or you are a manufacturer with an international client base and require guidance on the execution of warranty recalls and governmental compliance Global intermodal is able to help guide and consult with your legal team on your best course of action to minimize the financial impact to your organization.
GIES is able to coordinate as a consultant with corporate legal teams and an expert witness, on behalf of finance companies and equipment manufacturers and lessors in both Federal and International Maritime court litigation. In our niche, whether it is a UCC dispute, Bankruptcy, or multi-jurisdictional legal issue where recovery of high value equipment becomes actionable, we are there to help.
By definition, Intermodal Equipment lends itself to the global theater as it preforms its function and moves goods around the world. In the event of default by lessee, when a Bankruptcy judgment is issued, Liens are levied, or UCC agreements are violated—at all of these points of life in a company, things have obviously not gone according to plan and that is no time to introduce additional uncertainty to the situation.
Too often, between the time when the entities responsible for the equipment become insolvent or stop taking responsibility for that equipment, and the time the entity with the financial rights to it have an actionable right to recover it, it becomes unlocatable. Often it may be lost in a jurisdiction that does not adhere to the same standards of record keeping or legal compliance as that of the country of its origin. Wherever it is GIES has significant experience with more than 30 engagements spanning 23 countries involving the recovery of intermodal equipment and the liquidation of assets, recovering hundreds of millions of dollars for creditors
A successful liquidation is the product of quick but careful analysis and collaboration with all necessary parties and professionals in order to obtain the maximum net realization on the assets. Whether engaged by the company or a lender, GIES has the experience, skill sets and professional contacts necessary to make the best out of a less than favorable situation.
Maximizing recovery is more than calling an auctioneer to put sale tags on the collateral. It requires a strategy to develop an analysis of the disposition alternatives, including time lines, cash flow projections, locations of identified and located assets, and a detailed liquidation plan. Greater value can be obtained by proactively approaching customers, vendors, competitors and other parties which have a higher and more immediate utility for the assets than a pool of generic public auction purchasers. Prompt due diligence, analysis and action are key to a systematic liquidation. Selecting GIES to locate and recover your assets will help you regain control of your position.
GIES offers consultation services for fleet managers when selecting the correct type of equipment to serve long term needs. Often times used equipment is more cost effective than a new lease or purchase, but the aftermarket availability of desired equipment may not have adequate supply to allow for a matched fleet. Conversely, readily available equipment may seem like a cost effective solution, but an unsavvy buyer may not realize that the equipment has no aftermarket because of changes in international standards--effectively buying unsellable equipment that will be obsolete at the end of its usable life, leaving the organization only to realize its scrap value. Whatever the conditions may be GIES can help your organization to avoid making costly long term mistakes.
